The Taguchi method was applied to achieve the optimum anti-wear performance of AlCrN hard coatings deposited by the cathodic arc evaporation technique. Four deposition processes parameters, i.e. nitrogen pressure, arc current, bias voltage and substrate temperature with three levels, were selected to estimate the influence of each factor on the coatings defectiveness and their mechanical and tribological properties. Based on the statistical analyses, the optimum deposition conditions were determined to manufacture AlCrN coatings with the best tribological behaviour. The results indicated that, to minimise the volumetric wear, the nitrogen pressure, arc current, and bias voltage were the most important deposition process parameters. The results of the study of surface topographies and the mechanical properties of AlCrN coatings showed that, to obtain the best wear resistance, the coating must have good surface smoothness (a low participation of the surface defects) as well as sufficient hardness and good adhesion to the substrate. To reach the best anti-wear resistance for the AlCrN coating, the optimum deposition conditions should be as follows: the nitrogen pressure 2.6 Pa, arc current 50 A, negative bias voltage 150 V, and temperature 465 0C.
